The Macabre Tarot by Sam Rook
The Macabre Tarot is a dark 78-card deck created by artist and designer Sam Rook, designed for readers who want to explore shadow work, hidden emotions and the parts of themselves that are often left unexamined.
The deck follows the traditional tarot structure with 22 Major Arcana cards and four Minor Arcana suits, but approaches familiar tarot themes from a darker perspective. Its eerie black, white and gold artwork uses skulls, occult imagery and macabre symbolism to create a distinctive visual identity throughout the deck.
Rather than avoiding difficult themes, The Macabre Tarot is designed to encourage introspection and confrontation with fears, uncomfortable thoughts and personal shadows. This makes it particularly suited to shadow work, self-reflection and deeper intuitive readings.
The presentation is one of the deck's most distinctive features. The cards come inside a coffin-shaped magnetic box that produces a creaking coffin sound when opened. Gilded card edges complement the deck's black, white and gold visual palette.
A detailed guidebook is included to explain the cards and help readers work with the deck's darker interpretation of traditional tarot.
